Step-by-step:

How to apply for a Dubai work permit (clear guide)

  1. Get a confirmed job offer –

You must have an employment offer from a UAE employer (private company or free zone). Your employer is your official sponsor for the permit. UAE

  2. Employer applies for entry permit / quota-

The employer submits the initial application to the relevant authority (MOHRE or free-zone authority) to secure quota/entry permit for foreign workers.

  3. Receive Entry Permit (e-visa) & travel to UAE –

Once approved, you’ll get an entry permit to travel (sometimes called a “pink visa” or e-permit). Use it to travel and complete remaining formalities.

  4. Undergo medical fitness test-

After arrival, you must complete a government-approved medical check (screening for specific infectious diseases). This is mandatory for residence visa processing.

  5. Emirates ID application & biometrics –

Your fingerprints and photo are taken for the Emirates ID (federal identity card). Emirates ID registration is part of the residence process.

  6. Labour contract registration & work permit / labor card-

Employer submits your signed labour contract to MOHRE (or free-zone authority). The work permit / labour card record is created in government systems.

  7. Residence visa stamping in passport-

After medical and ID steps, the GDRFA or relevant authority stamps your passport with the residence visa (this converts temporary entry status into residency). You will then receive your Emirates ID.

  8. Start work legally-

Once your visa and work permit are complete and the Laboure contract is registered, you’re cleared to start your job in Dubai.

1. Documents checklist (common items)

  • Passport (min. 6 months validity)
  • Signed employment contract / job offer letter
  • Passport photos (white background)
  • Educational certificates and experience letters (if required)
  • Medical fitness certificate (after arrival)
  • Any professional licenses (if requires)

Typical timeline & who pays what

  • …Many parts of the process are employer-driven and can take days to a few weeks, depending on quota, authority, and documentation. Recent UAE digital updates aim to speed permit issuance. Expect variability — faster for free-zone hires, sometimes longer for private-sector quota approvals
